Star Valley Real Estate - A Market Overview

"The Narrows" south of Thayne, Wyoming. The Salt River flows alongside much of Star Valley between Alpine and Afton.
Star Valley is a picturesque mountain valley situated in Western Wyoming near the Idaho border. Often referred to as “America’s Little Switzerland” due to its rural charm and beautiful alpine setting, Star Valley is actually home to a collection of small towns anchored by the larger communities of Alpine, Wyoming on the northern end of the valley and Afton, Wyoming near the southern end. Stretching roughly 40 miles between these two communities, Star Valley is overlooked by the Salt River Range to the east and the Caribou National Forest along its western edge.
The Star Valley Real Estate Market
The Star Valley real estate market is a rapidly growing part of Northern Lincoln County, boasting one of Wyoming’s newest towns, Star Valley Ranch, newly incorporated in 2005, and one of Wyoming's fastest growing communities, Alpine, whose growth has been fueled by an increasing number of Jackson Hole commuters escaping the escalating property values of Teton County for the more realistic prices afforded there and in Etna, Wyoming, a few miles farther south, which includes a large real estate development area called Nordic Ranch.
With roots firmly planted in a rich agricultural history, the Star Valley, is still dotted with dairy farms, working ranches and uninterrupted large land parcels, where it’s not uncommon to see dairy cattle and horses quietly grazing. And, while the farming and ranching heritage is still evident, communities throughout the valley have added commercial necessities and conveniences for Star Valley residents and visitors. The three larger communities of Alpine, Afton and Thayne, Wyoming serve as commercial anchors providing retail services and amenities such as banking, grocery stores, shopping, medical services at the Star Valley Medical Center and entertainment options for Star Valley real estate owners.
One major characteristic defining this part of Northern Lincoln County is the opportunity for outdoor recreation of all types, it’s easily one of the top factors drawing many to purchase homes and invest in land or other Star Valley real estate. There is no doubt this Western Wyoming valley is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Whether passions run to fly-fishing the famed Salt River, hiking in the Bridger Teton National Forest, enjoying a round of golf on one of five Star Valley golf courses or boating around Palisades Reservoir, from Alpine to the Salt River Pass, this valley has you covered. And it’s not just the summer recreation that gets the locals, Star Valley seasonal homeowners and visitors out the door. In wintertime the area comes alive with snowmobiling along the Greys River, snowshoeing and cross-country or downhill skiing.
Small town charm, wide open alpine beauty and the abundant outdoor recreational opportunities of Star Valley, combined with proximity to larger communities like Salt Lake City, Utah and Idaho Falls, Idaho, have certainly fostered the dynamic growth of the Star Valley real estate market over the past decade and should continue to make it a valuable commodity.
